 Information about the Northfield Street/VT 12’s reconstruction project is included in the weekly construction updates. 

Weekly updates will be posted on this page and also on the City of Montpelier’s Facebook Pages, Makeover Montpelier and Montpelier Alive Facebook Pages.  Local media will also be posting update information weekly.  The City Clerk’s office will have paper copies of the updates available at the front desk.

Construction Update
Montpelier Transportation Projects

Project Location: State Street, Main Street, and VT 12 – Elm Street – Work to include milling, paving, manhole and drainage structure adjustments and extensive sidewalk improvements. VT 12-Northfield Street – new water, sewer, storm water improvements, sidewalks and a stabilized road base.

Northfield StreetMotorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternative routes using Derby Drive or Dog River Road during construction. Traffic delays of up to 10 minutes can be expected on Northfield Street.

Friday Night (7/21) Roundabout WorkDue to work being cancelled last Monday night for stormy weather, crews will work Friday night from 5:00 pm to midnight at the Roundabout to remain on schedule.

Week of July 24th, 2017

Night Work –

Main Street Roundabout Improvements (5:00 pm to 12:00 am)

Crews will continue construction to improve the sidewalk, curbing and approach islands at the Main Street Roundabout. Work this week will consist of replacing the sidewalk and curbing on the approach islands.  Crews may also adjust the manhole and drainage structures within the Roundabout as preparation for final paving.

The concrete work for the roundabout improvements is expected to be completed by the end of the week, weather permitting. Final paving will be scheduled following the completion of the sidewalk and curb improvements.  

Roundabout Detour – During active construction at the Roundabout, traffic will be directed to an alternate route marked with signs.

  • Main St [north / south] – Passenger vehicles will be directed to use School Street and Loomis Street
  • Trucks (tractor units) will not be directed to use the School Street/Loomis Street detour to access County Road and/or Main Street. They will be held at the roundabout until equipment is cleared and then directed through.  
  • Trucks (tractor units) on Main Street wanting to access VT 12/Elm Street will be directed to use School Street to Elm Street.
  • Local traffic will have access to all businesses and/or residents between School Street and the roundabout while the detour is in use.

Sidewalk Replacement Work (7:00 pm to 11:00 am)

This week, crews will continue replacing the various marked sidewalk panels in the following locations after midnight:

  • Main Street – Cool Jewels- Charlie O’s, Bagitos, M&M Discount Beverage – Early – Mid Week
  • Main Street – China Starr to Capitol Stationers – Mid – Late Week

The following driveway entrances have sidewalk panels that are scheduled for replacement. Entrances will be closed to vehicles for 4-5 days while the new concrete cures–

  • Main Street – Drive entrance between M&M Discount Beverage/Drawing Board (7/23)
  • State Street – Drive entrance between former VT Digger building/Vermont Federal Building (Est. 7/24-7/25) Drive will be closed to vehicles for 4 days following concrete pour.
  • Main Street – Fire Station – Not closing access. (Est. 7/26-7/27)

Day Work-

Sign crews will continue installing new traffic signs throughout the project. Minimal traffic impacts are expected.

Northfield Street Update

Crews will be working Saturday, July 22, 2017.

Sewer Installation – Installation of the new sewer main pipe will continue from #52 Northfield Street progressing towards Derby Drive. Service connections to the new sewer main between Memorial Drive and #39 Northfield Street may occur this week.

Water Installation – Installation of the new water main will also continue this week. Crews will also be testing the newly installed section of the water main from Memorial Drive to Prospect Street.  Once testing is complete, service connections will be scheduled.  Advance notification will be provided.

Traffic – Alternating one-way traffic is anticipated all week. Motorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternative routes using Derby Drive or Dog River Road during construction. Traffic delays of up to 10 minutes can be expected on Northfield Street.

It is illegal in VT to use any handheld portable electronic devices while driving. The law carries fines of up to $200 with points assessed if the violation occurs in a work zone.
